An Old-School RPG by Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall is on Kickstarter now.
If you played roleplaying games on your computer in the times before the aughts, there is a good chance that you sampled the work of Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall. Brathwaite worked extensively on the Wizadry series while Hall worked on Commander Keen, Anachronox, and Doom. Wizardry, of course, is one of the major touchstones of computer roleplaying games and Anachronox was a critical darling take on bringing a console RPG to the computer game market (I remember it having a distinctly Final Fantasy vibe during gameplay, but with a really neat Cyberpunk world). The two have now turned to Kickstarter (because, you know, Kickstarter) in order to try and raise funds to work together to make a new computer RPG. The game itself has a frontier punk vibe (maybe a little Firefly) from the information they have listed and promises the ability to recruit NPCs (something I always love doing, looking at you Baldur’s Gate and SNES Shadowrun). The big goal, of course is that – if the Kickstarter raises $1.9 million (which I understand to not be a small amount of money) that each designer will make a separate game, one a sequel to another. So, if you back the project now, you run the chance of getting two games for the price of one. Which is actually a pretty good stretch goal. If you would like more information about Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall’s Old School RPG, you can head over to Kickstarter.
