Damage Report – A real-time modular space crew board game
Damage Report from Break from Reality Games is a cooperative, modular board game for two to six players where each player controls a crew member of a space craft that is in the midst of some manner crisis. The game is played simultaneously and in real time with turn lengths that are based on (generally, apparently) the status of your life support systems. Damage Report comes with three scenarios (or more, based on the success of the Kickstarter campaign) and each scenario will have different success and failure conditions, like the first scenario – which requires that you get the Hyper Drive or your lasers back online within 45 minutes. You build your space ship from a number of modular tiles and each of the six available characters has a different special ability. From my read of the rules, it looks like the opposition is handled with an Attack deck that randomizes the threats faced by your crew, causing systems to take damage that you will then need to deal with in real time. I’m a big fan of simultaneous board games (Damage Report looks like it has some in common thematically with Space Alert, with which I am sure it will draw some comparisons, but it looks like it handles a lot of things very differently, including the fact that you are actually playing the game as you go, not planning to see how you do later) so it’s always nice to see another entry into that genre. It’s hard to replace the frenetic pace you get with a well-executed real time game, so I’d be interested in trying Damage Report out. If you’d like more information, definitely check out the Kickstarter and the BoardGameGeek entry for Damage Report.
