The Massive #3 Review – Landfall Part 3
Short Version: I find myself warming to The Massive over time and issue 3 has made it better. I’m still not completely sold on the series, but The Massive #3 is by the far the best issue of the series so far, and shows promise for the future. The idea has always been good, the execution is just feels a little uneven.

The Massive #3 continues the hunt of the crew of the Kapital, one of two ships in the fleet of pacifist environmentalist group Ninth Wave, for its sister ship The Massive, which disappeared rather mysteriously as the world has been undergoing unexplained environmental disaster. The Massive #3 continues the series’ pattern of interspersing scenes of the crew of the Massive with illustrations of the myriad chilling ways that the world is falling apart. The Massive #3 begins with a nice action scene, but The Massive, as a whole, is a series more about how these environmental disasters and the new world, one in which you can be assaulted in the open streets (which is hard to deal with if you’re a pacifist) challenge the crew of the Kapital and their ideologies. We start to see the first signs of strain for the crew in The Massive #3 as well as a promise (which has been implied before, but is made explicit here) that there is something bigger brewing under the surface here and that the Massive’s disappearance is likely not just a simple accident (because of course it’s not). There is still something about the pacing of the book that I find slightly difficult to follow from time to time. The story is interesting and Donaldson’s art is gorgeous throughout (especially the environmental disaster scenes), but the scenes occasionally jump in a way that make me hesitate to try and figure out where we are and what we are doing. If you can get past that (or don’t have that problem, which is entirely possible) then you’ll find a lot to like about The Massive #3, which is easily the best book of the series so far. The Massive #3 is available from your local comic shop right now for $2.99, as well as from Dark Horse Comics’ digital store.
