Leaving Megalopolis is presently on Kickstarter. Go directly there, if that’s your thing.
Leaving Megalopolis is the newest project from Secret Six team Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore. It’s an 80 page original graphic novel about a city that was the safest city on the planet that turns into a place where the citizens must struggle for survival. Simone describes Leaving Megalopolis as “survival horror”, following a small band of survivors in the previously-safe city that have to face not just their former protectors, who are now hunting the very people that they previously protected, but also whatever horrors lie within themselves. Calafiore’s art in the piece that they have shown over on the Kickstarter for Leaving Megalopolis looks fantastic, and – while the initial funding goal is only $34,000.00 – Simone and Calafiore have already identified bringing Secret Six colorist Jason Wright on board, as well as expanding the page count as possible stretch goals (although they haven’t mentioned how much Leaving Megalopolis would have to beat its initial goal by). Simone and Calafiore are working on Leaving Megalopolis right now and promise that they will be posting more art as they get it completed. They are promising that Leaving Megalopolis will be a dark book, and Simone describes it as a “big, raw, scary story” with action, violence, and terror. There’s always a gamble whenever you back a Kickstarter, but Simone’s a AAA writer and Calafiore’s a AAA artist, so Leaving Megalopolis definitely looks worth checking out. As I am writing this, all of the remarked copies of Leaving Megalopolis (containg a sketch from Calafiore) have been taken, as have all of the copies of the original script personalized by Simone, although you can still get a 9×12 commission from Calafiore along with a copy of Leaving Megalopolis for $150 if you want to put down some extra change. If you’re looking for something a little less expensive, a PDF copy of Leaving Megalopolis is very reasonable at $9 and a soft-cover copy is $15 and includes a PDF copy on Kickstarter. Simone and Calafiore hope to ship Leaving Megalopolis in early 2013.
What dies everyone think about Leaving Megalopolis? Do you think Simone and Calafiore have a winner here? It certainly doesn’t look like it will be for lack of funding.
