At an event that has become much more about movies than comic books, Image Comics made their panel about, well, comics. A bunch of comics. Check out the list over on Comicsbeat if you don’t believe me. That is some 12 new series announced, if my ability to count hasn’t completely failed me, including two new Joe Casey books. The rest of the list includes Gary Whtta, Darick Robertson, Jay Faerber, Joe Harris, Whilce Portacio, Glen Brunswick, Eric Stephenson, Matt Fraction, Howard Chaykin, KellySue DeConnick, Emma Rios, Brandon Graham, James Robinson, J. Bone, Pietr Kowalski, David Messina, Chris Roberson, and Paul Mayberry. Whew. That’s a lot of really talented creators working on a lot of interesting looking books. While there is still a sort of cache for getting to work on Batman or The Avengers or The X-men, it looks like you’re going to see more and more comic book creators going the creator-owned route. I’m no comic book writer, but I’m sure it’s not a good time to come up with an awesome idea for whatever big-name brand you’re working on and then be told ‘no, we don’t think that’s the right direction for the character’. At any rate, definitely look forward to checking some of these out.
